The Emperor's New Clothes. . .and mine

I'm sure you've all read The Emperor's New Clothes by Hans Christian Andersen. . .if you haven't, you should! So at the end of the book, the Emperor is quite embarrassed by his outfit. . .or lack thereof! I had a similar--but not quite--experience myself concerning embarrassment through the means of clothing!

Some of my very favorite things are J.Crew sweaters. Each year they seem to come out with the most amazing prints. . .and this year was no exception. I fell in love with the sweater pictured above. In fact, I figured out a way to wear this sweater s-e-v-e-r-a-l (probably 7-8) times throughout the space of 2 weeks without the same people seeing me in it! Oh yes, I thought I was brilliant--and even told several of my very dear friends about my apparent smartness. It all caught up to me, however, on the night of my surprise birthday party--that my sweet husband planned for me. . .

It was a Sunday night. . .we already had "plans" to go to a friend's house--but I asked Steve if we could drop by the house to change clothes first. So we arrived home and I could hardly wait to. . .yes, put on my favorite sweater and jeans. (!!!) I clearly remember saying to Steve, "I know I've worn this sweater a lot lately, but it's just Adam and Kerry--they won't care." I said that because Adam and Kerry are close friends--and I had already told Kerry the sweater saga and figured they wouldn't mind seeing my sweater a second (or third??) time that week! Steve didn't seem to disagree. . .which, looking back on it, I am shocked that he didn't hint for me to wear something else, considering. . .but he was afraid that I would figure the whole "surprise" plan out if he acted weird about it!

Let's just say, when I walked into the room and saw several of my "very dear friends", the only thing I could think about was taking off my coat and unveiling "THE" sweater!!!!!!!! Yes. . .I still do love my sweater. . .but I wear it with caution! By the way, Adam bought Kerry a similar sweater for Christmas and she could hardly stop laughing when she opened it! Good times!!

  2. Great story Sarah! Embarrassing, but funny. I used to be careful and wear a different sweater to church every week, but we have a few homeless families in our church and it makes me feel funny wearing a different sweater every week. Knowing that they don't have anything and I have well over 50 sweaters. We had so much to be thankful for; God is so good! I love your sweater.

  8. too funny! I had no idea that you were wearing a repeat sweater...but if it makes you feel any better...I had to wear the same sweater and skirt to church last winter after I had Titus...long story...but I had to do it. But do you know that every Sunday I had people asking me if I had gotten a new sweater! I haven't worn the sweater since...but I will be pulling it out to wear again as soon as Ezra begins going to church!:)

  10. LOL! Great story! I kept putting Jack in the GAP sweater outfit that I got him and realized later that he was wearing it at Christmas, my birthday, new years, etc. IT's in EVERY picture. Different people, but all shown in pics. Oh well, we have to get our money's worth and wear things lots. Wear a $40 sweat 40 times and it's only a $1 per wear! :)
