Dr. Oz's "Glass of Fresh". *gag*

I am not sure if this drink was intended to be juiced or blended. . .we blended it and unfortunately, even after putting it in a pretty glass and hoping for the best, we. could. not. handle. it. Period.

(Not sure if you might possibly, just maaaaaaybe, might have already caught that feeling from the picture my husband decided was a MUST).

I am determined to get more healthy. However, I don't foresee this drink being a part of the new-and-improved-healthier-Bray9s. But I am also not giving up. I think I'll take all of our ingredients over to Kerry's house and try her juicer. We'll see. Any of you have a better idea for getting plenty of greens in each day? We do eat an organic green salad almost every night and I am taking my barley green too, Dad. I'll be waiting on pins and needles for your suggestions, hehe!

Oh--I even tried, as a last resort, adding a tablespoon of peanut butter. Everything is better with peanut butter, right? ? ? ? Um, wrong.
Just in case you were wondering what is in Dr. Oz's green drink. . .
  • 2 cups spinach
  • 2 cups cucumber
  • 1 head of celery
  • 1/2 inch or teaspoon ginger root
  • 1 bunch parsley
  • 2 apples
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon

  1. I think it will be tastier (emphasis on the -ER) with the juicer. All that pulp and roughage would not be pleasant. (I love the photo!!) You will have to update and let us know how the juiced version goes.

  4. Hey friend! :) Have you ever tried Naked Juice? Sounds kinky - but it's pretty good. It has CRAZY amounts of fruits and veggies. I think the one most like your drink would be called "Green Machine." Maybe it's more cost-effective when you consider the time and energy spent to buy the veggies regularly, chop 'em up, and juice them - but I'm not sure. Anyways, Dave and I were on a strick diet of these for about 6 months, and it was SOOOO good for us! We never got sick!

  6. OK, well this works for the kids and I and we love it- it doesn't even come close to Dr Oz's, but it gets you more greens than nothing.

In a blender- a bunch of frozen strawberries, frozen or fresh bananas, and then as much fresh spinach as you want, then add about a half blender full of water (you may need more if it won't blend)

We have tried a little spinach and and a lot of spinach and it tastes the same! Very yummy smoothy and we feel very healthy when we eat it. The kids ask for it every day.

  7. I definitely like Sara's version, however, I don't particularly like spinach. I ate it out of the can when pregnant!!! I would say the ginger alone would make me gag but minus that and add a banana and some strawberries ~ how bad could that be? And, I think your dad will probably tell you to eat your oats and flaxseed :)

  8. I agree with Keara,
the Naked Juice is tasty and has TONS of fruits and veggies in them. I can't buy the fruits for as cheap as the juice is. Also, have to agree with someone else re. the ginger. definitely try it w/o that unless you're going for the benefits of ginger (i don't know what they are??)
Let us know what the update is! I'm sure I could use a few more veggies too.

  9. I've had the version with fresh spinach and banana. I love it. You don't taste spinach at all.

  12. I agree that it will probably be much better juiced than blended. You are brave to try it that way! I wonder if juicing carrots with it would be good? They tend to make things a lot sweeter, and might cover up the spinach taste. . .and they're really good for you juiced!

I totally agree you need to try it in a juicer. I alway have issues with the texture thing. I tried making carrot juice once in the blender and it ended up being like trying to drink stewed carrots. :( I can't eat cooked carrots to this day.

You might try chilling the juice that usually helps. Also, make sure the apples you are using are sweet apples not tart it will help to overpower the other stuff.

  17. I just saw this on Oprah the other day and was wondering how it would taste... Now I know I don't need to bother making it! :) I think he did do it in the blender, though...

  18. AH...one of the famous (or should I say infamous) green smoothies!!?? I tried green smoothies for a while...although they were so ladened with blueberries and bananas and such that I'm not sure the spinach was a very large percentage. They were yummy though =) I am trying to get more healthy too.

  19. Sorry, I've been away from my computer for a while. The only answer is more barley green and a chocolate/peanut butter smoothie once in a while.
