My Monday evening..............

Last night, I was able to meet with a few friends from church to discuss chapters 3 and 4 from Paul Miller's book, A Praying Life: Connecting with God in a Distracting World. I have greatly appreciated Miller's honesty and insight so far. Here are a few quotes that have really made me stop and think--or rethink my prayer life! I would highly recommend that you order yourself a copy of this book..........

[1] Prayer is meant to be the conversation where your life and your God meet
[2] The praying life feels like dinner with good friends
[3] Learning to pray doesn't offer you a less busy life; it offers you a less busy heart
[4] Private, personal prayer is one of the last great bastions of legalism. In order to pray like a child, you might need to unlearn the non-personal, non-real praying that you've been taught
[5] Come overwhelmed with life. Come with a wandering mind. Come messy.....Jesus didn't come for the righteous. He came for sinners. All of us qualify. The very things we try to get rid of--our weariness, our distractedness, our messiness--are what get us in the front door! That's how the gospel works. That's how prayer works.
[6] This is the gospel, the welcoming heart of God. God also cheers when we come to him with our wobbling, unsteady prayers. Jesus does not say, "Come to Me, all you who have learned how to concentrate in prayer, whose minds no longer wander, and I will give you rest." No, Jesus opens his arms to his needy children and says, "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest" {Matthew 11:28}. The criteria for coming to Jesus is weariness. Come overwhelmed with life. Come with your wandering mind. Come messy.
