A Walmart Story (Yes, you are still at the right blog.)

A couple of weeks ago, I darkened the doors of Walmart for the first time in, wait for it, three years! And to tell the truth, a part of me felt guilty, like I had to turn in my 'Oregonian-card' (Oregonians are widely anti-Walmart), while another part of me, mostly while in the packaging and kids' slippers aisles, wanted to yell, "oh my goodness! Walmart, you're my new best friend!"

I discovered boxes, the same sizes that cost $4 at UPS for my Etsy orders, for $0.89! And if that wasn't already cause for celebration, my Graeme-bear has been requesting shark slippers for Christmas since somewhere around September, (another thing that I appreciate so much about this little boy-- his dedication-- he finds something he loves and there's no turning back, no indecision) and what do you know? Walmart came to the rescue!

I even called my husband, from the packaging aisle, in all of my excitement. And yet again from the slippers aisle. I think by the second phone call he'd decided to tag along on the next Walmart trip. And so, this past weekend, we set out on a hunt for a pair of everyday/tennis shoes for Graeme-- something that would match almost everything he owns but comfortable to run in, too. We found them. I mean, it was hard not to with those electric blue shoe laces! Which, for the record, I think are pretty fun in their own right. I was sold, though, when I saw that the upper sole was leather. And gray!

We brought home our $13.97 purchase and tweaked it with a roll of leather laces. Today, while Jobie snoozed downstairs, Graeme and I snuck outside for a breath of fresh (cold!) air. And I thought to myself, as I stared at my cardigan-loving, pinecone-admiring, leather-laced shoes-wearing, handsome boy-- A shoe size of 10 already? Goodness, time, slow down.

In totally unrelated news, for all of you who like to listen to Christmas music before Thanksgiving, my Christmas collection of original piano solos, Here + There is now available for download here! A proper blog introduction to it is coming on Friday. For now, Happy Thanksgiving!

Also, congratulations to Kelly Hughes, the winner of the 2014 Cranny Calendar giveaway!

  1. I admit it, I love Walmart. I have since the kids were babies because I don't have to run all over town to different stores extending a 1 hour shopping trip to a 4-6 hour trip like my Mom had to. One store and it's done and it's less expensive. When you're pinching pennies and time with the family, every cent and second counts. Congrats on your Wally's finds. ;-)

    1. Amanda, first of all, I hope that you are feeling better! I was talking with your mom yesterday and that sickness sounds awful. Praying for rest and health for you, today! Secondly, yes, I am so happy that I tried Walmart again. As young marrieds, Steve and I kind of had this mindset that we were above Walmart. It's something that we are definitely not proud of! We fell into that trap of "everything had to be from The Nicest stores." Over the years, I think God has shown us that that sort of living can be very prideful. And hurtful to others. And just plain silly : ) So, I guess what I'm trying to say is, I'm glad that I was reintroduced to Walmart. That God didn't leave me in a heap of materialism-- even though my heart has a long way to go!

Whew! You probably didn't want to hear all of that! But wanted to share with you a little more behind this little Walmart story : ) Yay for Walmarts in our lives : )

    2. Yes, I am finally feeling better thank you! ;-) But, you probably knew that since you saw me in church today. (Sorry, I didn't see this until today lol.) You never have to apologize for explaining yourself. I more than welcome it, especially since I tend to ramble lol. I find your views refreshing and your artwork (aka. photographs, blog, etsy shop, piano compositions and playing, and more) absolutely beautiful. We really need to get together sometime. :)

    3. Ack! I'm so glad I saw this! My comments have been doing something strange-- my blog use to notify me when a comment was left, but lately, hasn't been doing that! Thank you for singing this morning! What a beautiful voice God gave you! And yes to getting together! You are busier than me, so name the time and I will be there : ) Would love that.

  3. I am so excited about this beautiful music! I am going to order the mp3s as soon as I get up and get my credit card.

I have to admit that I am not a lover of the superstore. I think it is my agoraphobic tendencies. :O) If I go when there is no crowd, the whole experience is much less stressful. I'm glad you could find some things that you needed. The shoes are adorable with your personal touches.

    Happy Thanksgiving, friend!

    1. Thank you, friend! I hear you on the stressful crowd thing. I was out running errands the day before Thanksgiving (ONLY because Graeme was in preschool and I was forced to be out and about!) and I thought I was going to lose my mind! It was so crazy. I kept telling myself, "drive slow, take deep breaths, there is no hurry!" : )
